We all need to know what is expected of us, what skills we need to improve or develop for our job and how to succeed in meeting expectations. Managing someone’s performance, encouraging them to improve it even more and challenging them to keep learning to acquire skills and knowledge, does not have to be complicated but relies on an effective manager communicating well and regularly with their employee.

Basic Performance Appraisal + Good Management
Appraisal can simply be a matter of the line manager explaining how they would like the job performed within certain standards, rules of conduct and behaviour and the scope of the job responsibilities and tasks and then meeting regularly to discuss successes, underperformance, concerns or identifying training gaps.
This can be part of a straightforward appraisal system and will be successful as long as there are regular progress meetings during the year and not just one meeting that looks at everything over the past year including raising issues that may have happened several months ago.
Performance Management Systems
A company wishing to review all aspects of employee’s performance and link them to their short- and long-term goals, would be better to consider a more robust performance management system. This will include all of the elements as for appraisals, but in addition the cycle will start with the Company’s objectives from which each team and employee will have personal objectives which tie into the overall vision. This is a way of helping the team to succeed and contribute to the overall success of the company. It also gives employees a clear sense of their involvement in the success of the business. Setting personal objectives has to be done with the manager and they should be: (a) clearly understood by both parties, (b) given a time frame and (c) be specific. Often a Performance Management system will also include an element of performance for every employee that the company needs to emphasise or raise their game on – eg. improving Customer Service standards in order to increase market share. An element of the appraisal can be centred around some Customer Service standards that all employees have to be measured against during and at the end of the review period.
The process should include regular progress meetings to check that objectives are on track and to ensure that any training or development needs are in place so they can succeed.
Horizon HR has extensive experience of implementing Performance Management systems (with performance related pay) including Behavioural Competencies which focus on what a business wants to change or improve as well as simpler appraisal systems but all to suit different organisations and their requirements.
